Children, aged 12 and 13, drive 35km to raise alarm about parents trapped down well

A 12 and 13-year-old have driven 35km to the nearest road in a desperate bid to save the life of their parents who were trapped down a well on their remote northern NSW property.
Police say their journey failed to save their father who died after apparently becoming overwhelmed by fumes in the well.
The 29-year-old had been installing a water pump at the bottom of the well near Weilmoringle, about 225km north-west of Lightning Ridge, on Saturday.
His 28-year-old partner had tried to rescue him but fell on to a ledge in the well when a rope ladder broke.
It was then their two children took charge, driving off the property to raise the alarm. NSW police said the children were able to flag down a passing motorist who alerted emergency services.
Authorities pronounced their father dead at the scene, while their mother was flown by helicopter to Orange Base hospital where she remains in a serious condition suffering from shock and possible carbon monoxide poisoning.
A police spokesman said it was not uncommon for children on large and remote rural properties to know how to drive in case of emergency situations.
